Behind the Deal
Good morning. I have a quick favor to ask. I’m working on a new page for my website and want to include a few reader testimonials. If you’ve been loving Crashing Up recently, I’d really appreciate if you replied with a review!
Here’s what I have to share this week:
I’ve made the decision to move off of Substack and transfer over to a new email service provider. Aside from slight design changes, this won’t effect how you receive Crashing Up. However it will require a bit of backend work for me, so there will be no newsletter next Monday as I get everything set up and functioning properly.
📕What I’ve Been Reading:
There’s a common misconception that you need to quit your job in order to start a business. Yet studies have shown that those whose businesses first start as a side hustles actually have a higher chance of success. Steph Smith examines the balance between working a full-time job and maintaining a side project while highlighting how individuals’ self-limiting beliefs are often larger roadblocks than a lack of time or energy.
📺What I’ve Been Watching:
Over the past year, Dunkin’ has cemented itself as one of Gen Z’s favorite fast casual chains. Thanks to a collab with Charli D’Amelio, Dunkin’ has racked up over 2.4 million followers on TikTok, more than any other fast casual food brand. The day ‘The Charli’ (a cold brew with caramel and whole milk) launched, Dunkin’ saw a 20% jump in cold brew sales. The day after, that number jumped again to 45%. Dunkin’s now going all in on TikTok, launching a remix to the original Charli drink and a strategic initiative encouraging employees to create content while on the clock.
On the Colin and Samir show, Colin and Samir break down the economics behind the Charli deal, the strategy behind Dunkin’s employee creator program and discuss how a national brand can unlock the future of corporate creators.

🧰Tool of the Week:
Wappalyzer lets you instantly reveal the technology stack and contact details of any website. Plug in the URL of any company and you can find out what web frameworks, code libraries, content management systems, ecommerce platforms, and marketing automation tools are used. Depending on your goals, this data can be used for market research, competitive analysis, lead generation or just for finding cool tools to help grow your business.
That’s it for this week. If you’re new here and want to catch up on some old editions, check out two of my favorites, Alone Together and The Owls and The Larks.
I’d love if you left me feedback on today’s issue. If you enjoyed it, I encourage you to pass it along to your most curious business minded friends.
Until next time,
Randy
